Microsoft just added Oculus Rift support as a free update to Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta. A team from Microsoft collaborated with a team from Oculus Rift to make this update possible. Users can now explore, create and play Minecraft in virtual reality with their Oculus Rift devices. Minecraft has been available in VR on Gear VR headsets. On the Windows 10 Edition, there is support for controllers, as well as a keyboard and mouse setup. The update is only available on Windows 10, and is an experimental feature.

There are some Windows 10 DX11 performance optimisations for this release. The update adds support for multi sampling anti aliasing in VR. All the previous enhancements for the Gear VR version has been included, with additional options. The developers found that jerky movements work better than smooth ones for a VR experience. Instead of smooth turnings, there are stutter turnings of twenty two and a half degrees. This apparently increases the comfort levels when turning quickly. The render distance has been tweaked to fully utilise available graphic cards.

There is a mode in the VR experience, where you can play on a flat screen in a VR Minecraft living room. A toggle transports you into the screen into an immersive VR experience. There are menu options to change as per comfort levels and performance capacities. The VR version of the game and the regular version are compatible, so it is possible to move games from one to the other.
